My primary CG'ing tool would be Photoshop Elements 5.0. It's got everything I want (most of the time) where I want it in a interface that is easy to work with once you understand what it needs from you to get it to work. It would be nice to have Photoshop 7, but I don't know where I can get it for free anymore.
My secondaries are Painter X (which is a powerful, amazing program, but very tricky to use if you don't understand what all the tools do and why in any given situation), and Gimpshop. I like Painter for the glow pen and the cool special effect brushes, while I use Gimp for the path tool, the solar flares, and the pattern maps.
I used to use a very primal version of Paint.Net back in 2005, but it was a jumbled mess of confusion to someone who was just trying to get into computer art, so I got into Photoshop instead. I'm not regretting a thing.

I'm currently looking for a drawing editor to do my cartoons on. Although it's not good for my computer, I installed and uninstalled a few, so I can tell you what I tried out.
Inkscape
It's a free vector editor voted to be the best free image software of 2012 according to About.com. What I don't like about it is the zoom. The brush size doesn't change as you zoom in or out. It stays as its actual size as we see it on the screen. (Uninstalled)
Arcsoft Photostudio
This was a nice one. It had a nice interface and was easy to navigate. It just didn't have the features I was looking for. (Disabled anti aliasing brush tool, and having smooth curves) My main goal is to find a program that has smooth curves with its free hand tools. If you don't know what I mean, then try using Aviary's Vector Editor. http://advanced.avia...s/vector-editor It's limited with features, but it has that "auto-adjust in the curves" feature that I'm looking for in the pencil tool. It's just that the smoothness is way too much. It changes the shape by a lot.
Xara Designer
This was interesting indeed. I maybe should've played with it longer. I was just having such a hard time figuring it out. It doesn't have a layers palette. Instead, everything you draw is automatically its own layer. You can still choose what to have in front and back. Also, there was a unique tool not in many other editors. You could create your own points on an object and then adjust limbs. The program can also be used to make web pages, animations, and other documents. A downside is that their fill tool is setup differently. Their tutorial online said to click and hold it as running across an object, but it never worked for me. I didn't like that. And not having a layers palette is upsetting. I like to be able to trace images every now and then.
Adobe Photoshop Elements
Awesome interface. Cool addition of Elements Photo Organizer (image viewer). The main thing that I hated is that after using the lasso tool too long, the editor just freezes on you. How can I do editing if that happens? And the text is way too small.
The above probably sounds ridiculous to you. lol That's me cursing good editors.

I am thinking of trying out Serif Photo/ Draw Studio next. From what I read and the videos I watched from their website, it looks very neat. I just wish that their editor looked more user friendly.

For anything else, GIMP 2.8. I've used Inkscape before as well, but then about... 6 months later I went to use it again and couldn't even make a line the way I wanted lol So, while it's not quite as nice as making an SVG, I use GIMP's paths since they can be easily resized and redrawn without quality loss. So... same effect, just a bit more time consuming in some ways, but on the other hand, I know GIMP pretty well so I can produce better quality in a quicker fashion.
And then sometimes, if I'm working with something pixelized that would be easier working with in layers, I'll use both back and forth so I can easily rearrange and edit my layers or whatever else. Also, in particular, it's great for placing sprites in a scene!

Yeah, Microsoft Paint is what I use and have always used, mainly because I am so used to it. Although, the more versions that come out, the more bugs I am finding. First in Vista, and then in 7.

From what I have use on my computer.
Photoshop CS4
Illustrator CS4
InDesign CS4
Dreamweaver CS4
Even though I have Adobe Creative Suite 4, which it mean I have almost everything of the CS4. It was gift.
I am not pro yet, but I just start to learn about the skill since last Spring. It is depends on how much do you spent the time on your artwork.

Since this bumped, I seen your other post about Paint changing/bugs. I'm not sure if you would want to do this, since you found StylePix, but it's relatively simple if so. If you want, you can copy Paint from XP right into Windows 7 and it'll run fine. Paint from Vista will also run perfectly as well. If you need either I can link you to them (for Vista's, the files come from a very trustworthy site I use constantly, and for XP's, I scanned MSPaint.exe with Avast and tested it already for ya), as well as a little tutorial on how to get Vista's to fully replace 7's. It's too bad Vista's isn't portable like XP's, thanks to the outside MUI file. But I digress.
I also don't like 7's Paint, great features in idea I think, just not executed how I'd like to have seen them.

Thanks, I appreciate it, but I'm all set. I only use Paint for the simple stuff now, like scaling manually, and adding text.

Flash 8 Pro for vector art such as Patapon and My Little Pony. (Classy, huh?)
I've been putting off getting Illustrator to replace Flash for a while now, but I plan to.
Sorry people! My sprite request spaces are full at the moment!
I'm currently working with:
