In Topic: Am I The Only One Who Likes X7?
07 March 2013 - 04:35 AM
X7 is severely underrated.
Storywise- it is my favorite of the series.
Red Alert itself is awesome.
If you ask me, Red is the single most underrated character in all of Megaman X.
I really don't understand why there is a lack of fan fiction stories with this man or his group.
As for his look, this guy has more spikes on his body than the 3rd stage of Zero Space in X5.
While this looks awkward, it is very useful in combat. He can impale people with his shoulders, he can stab people with his knees, he can cut people with his elbows, and by the looks of the spikes at the tips of his shoes, one can make the case that he can hook himself onto a pipe across the ceiling in an inverted Batman style position and get the drop on them.
Additionally, he is modeled after the grim reaper and the white lines on his arms were meant to represent bones. His scar is also a testament to his warlike life style and since he didn't even tell Axl where it came from it adds depth and mystery to his character. It also conveys the image of a renegade hero akin to the grown up Enzo Matrix.
Finally, his body screams "Anti-Signas." If you put the generals back to back, their bodies have similar structure but opposite makeovers.
Red's hair is unkempt, where as Signas has a formal officer hat. Signas has conventional "ears" while Red's are unnaturally extended. Signas has formal authority coverings on his shoulders but Red's are chaotic and street.
Red's image conveys a man of confrontational battle while Signas' conveys a war strategist who never sees the battlefield. This was the perfect contrast for the story.
Then there is his power. This guy can create duplicates of himself, summon volt tornadoes at will and he has a double bladed scythe, which he is skilled enough to use it without impaling himself, and it can fire beams of light with it.
And who can forget his fighting skill. This man took on X, Zero, and Axl AT THE SAME TIME and even though he lost he put up a good fight and was a good sport about it.
Whether you liked X7 or not, one can't deny that there is plenty of personality among the Red alert members.
But beyond the group itself, Red is a character with a rich history, especially for a man who only appeared in one game.
He's a rumored former Repliforce officer, which gave him an anti-authority far right militia attitude due to the outcome of the war. He sustained an anarchistic structured Vigilante Group with his charisma, He's good at hunting mavericks but at the same time has a father side to him. Despite his military demeanor he is fairly laid back, he has an amusingly limited capacity for anger which, according to Axl, would not stop him from smashing a TV if he saw Tonion's dance, and to top it all off, Red has the social skills to earn the respect of and be friends with an amnesiac child, a Sage Monkey, an elderly Anteater, a man-child Onion, a rowdy Boar, an attention hungry Kangaroo kid, a resentful Fish, a competitive Crow, and a Hyena with a VERY LOW pain tolerance- all at the same time and under the same roof.
I can so see Red sitting back as the other members sing a "Red alert Irish Drinking Song" in celebration of a victory or joining in himself.
Finally Red was one of the most actively noble antagonists. Sigma was genocidal Darwinist with luciferaian ambitions, the Repliforce was trying to separate from humanity, Gate wanted a new world order built on the blood of the "foolish," Lumine and Redips were Sigma to next level, but Red (at first) merely wanted to hunt down mavericks before the crime rate choked what little life was left out of the world. He just didn't like being restrained by the hunter’s regulation for whatever reason.
Sadly he fell from grace, retaining only a misguided loyalty that compelled him to fight and die with his men than surrender peacefully as the lone survivor of the remaining members of Red Alert.
On a historical note, Red conveyed an atmosphere of the cold war.
Crimson Palace was located in Russia
The Soviet Union was collectively referred to as the "Red Menace."
In fact, Red comes across as Nikita Khrushchev when he challenges the hunters. He mocks X for retiring calling him a deadbeat retiree with no respect for his military record.
One can almost hear Khrushchev's declaration "We will bury you!" when Red challenges the hunters.
The main difference between the two as that Red was being manipulated but as a former Repliforce officer, he still inherited the rivalry and bitterness between the two groups.
So with all this rich detail why does this great character not get more respect?
There is another reason why X7 should be loved by the Megaman community.
This is the only time we see the depths of X's philisophical conflict and the extent of his power.
For Years X has been plagued by constant ethical paranoia over whether or not his is doing the right thing.
In fact, one could invoke Neitzche's madman to describe X's moral dilema
"How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us? Do we not need to light lanterns in the morning"
In X7 X's heart told him his efforts as a Maverick Hunter were doing more harm than good and he retreated from the front lines when the Hunters needed him most.
As a result, a group of 10 brutal vigilantes who did not play by the rules were forced to fill the void that the weakened Maverick Hunters left.
The Maverick Hunters were so weakened that Red Alert, though illegal, became recognized as a legitimate authority by the populace.
The success of Red Alert attracted Sigma's attention and with his corruptive nature, Red Alert started murdering innocent reploids and eventually they were infected with the virus which caused Axl to defect and ultimately started a war between a Vigilante Group and the Government.
All because X followed his heart.
It took the strength of 10 Brutal vigilanties who did not play by the rules to replace X-one hunter who followed the rules more than anyone. That is how powerful and influental he is.
And it took Red Alert for us to see that.
X7 gave us a character study of X without even giving him the spot light.
For that alone it should be praised. -

This reminds me of an essay I wrote where I stretched out all the biblical imagery in the series. There is both biblical and Darwinian imagery in the sies and an apparent war between the two.
I concluded that X is more of a consistent atheist than anything else- in constant ethical paranoia with no absolute morality grounded in transcendenent objective standard with warring religious imagery in the background.

Chapter 1 gives an overview of the imagery and chapter 4 deals with the ethical implications of the Darwinian and biblical ideas in the series
