Weird mic input

My vista laptop is just being weird. It seems that my mic has been detected, yet my sound isn't being detected when recording. I ran a test or two, and I've found out that the recorder is getting some sort of noise detection, but the sound is just the noise from the fan inside of the laptop along with the noises from when the computer processes input. Now everytime I put the microphone in its jack, I get this result. I've researched all I could about regedit, and I've already updated my sound card. Can anyone help?
