The Mega Man (X) franchise has ALWAYS been about Platform-based Side Scrolling.
Once X7 came into play Capcom had a Panic-attack at how to incorporate modern 3D Gaming with the old traditional outset, and come time to... try again with X8, they really fixed a lot of things. And I mean a lot... But they still inevitably fucked things up with Yeti's & Man-o-War's stages. The Waste Compactor thing for Burn Rooster's stage has definitely been done before, but the downward scrolling was a really nice challenge, and I absolutely loved that you had to make your way back up before teleporting out of there! We've already discussed the novelty of changing Gravity in Antonion's stage. And lastly, I quite enjoyed the little Mechaniloid chase that was Earthrock Trilobyte's stage. It had a very... Illumina from X6 vibe to it, only with a much better - interactive Sub-Boss battle.
So that said. X8 definitely wasn't a Fail at Stage Design in my opinion. They tried a bunch of newer challenges and added a bunch of shop/upgrades, to force replay value... But other than that, I loved it. Those Inter-Mission's were interesting. I didn't much like the Crab one at Noah's Park... but that's mainly only there for grinding purposes, and to bring back the good ole' "Can you beat your high score??
" element that many new games are lacking.

Actually, I think they could pull off a completely 3D Mega Man X game if they geared it somewhat like Legends, and added things like an semi-automatic target lock (like, your foe lights up when it can be targeted), and even having a combo move that makes Zero/X/Axl do a certain uber move (like maybe Zero making an epic slash combo) w/ invincibility frames while being preformed. Then have moves like that and your standard ones be monitored by a guage (you have to fight/take damage to fill it up, and using the awesome combo moves brings the gauge down again. Using standard saber/buster moves does not bring gauge down/give invincibility frames) They could even incorporate a "leveling up" scheme integrated with getting your upgrades and completing certain tasks/levels.
If they only had the right people doing it, and actually tried, I'm SURE Capcom could make a wonderful new game that'd also sell like cheeseburgers.

Though, the one thing they HAVE to do in my opinion is change how their movements are animated/speed of running/walking. The slowness KILLED me. It needs to have a more realistic movement/speed.

Really, all they need to do is make it a cover-and-shoot 3rd person shooter. Like GoW, but with platforming, dashing, and wall jumping.

Honestly. The more I play Infamous, the more I REALLY wanna see an X9 (HAH!) game like that.
Some things would GREATLY be modified if MMX became an Over-world Free form type of thing, but Holy shit. The hours of fun you could put into a thing like that!
Or screw it, how about the Tron game that came out in like... 2011. That game had a cool feel to it too. You were always on a track, but there was momentum to it. For the MMX series to survive by today's standards, I definitely think some sort of GoW engine would have to be molded into the tradition Rock-Paper-Scissors format.
And I for one would LOVE to play it. Even if it was X7++ all over again.
