Is anyone here actually good at keeping C, B, A, or even S ranks?

I maintained a C through LOTS of hard work and patience. It really only takes one or two bad ranks to drag you down-- before that, I had a B.
Your best bet is just to keep at it and learn from mistakes you make.

Sometimes you gotta do other things. They take into account how much damage you take, cyber elves used, and all sorts of stuff. There are also sometimes tasks in level you gotta do (like destroying all the security cameras, or killing certain enemies.)
It's frustrating. Like, makes you wanna growl and rip something open.

See, it's basically a matter of:
-Be fast.
-Destroy many enemies
-Take as little damage as possible.
-Do not lose lives.
-Complete mission objectives
-Do not use score penalty upgrades.
As long as you fulfill the bottom three at all cost, there's some leeway from ~B to S in what your final rank will be, but it should never be C or below. Remember, sub tanks are your friend; they don't run completely dry with each use, unlike in the X-series, and will avoid that dreaded additional score penalty for losing a life.
All in all, just get the select few upgrades allowed to you and practice on each stage and boss a lot. Soon it becomes second nature to survive with a good rank from start to finish. This is easiest in Z3 and Z4 new game+ when the Shadow Dash and 7-stage Elf are available. Also, Ultimate Mode.

It all sounds good and everything, but I think the ranking system preventing you from getting EX skills and different forms is going way too far. Half of the people who play the game will probably not experience the other forms because of how hard it is to perfect a Zero game. I will at least practice maybe, but I would probably practice with save states in a ROM and then actually try it out on my cartridge.
Thankfully the games are fun enough that putting that much effort in is reasonable, but I can't imagine playing some of the latter parts without Cyber Elves. It's too bad using Cyber Elves lowers you rank since it feels so satisfying to get a double health bar.

Points mean everything, actually. But it's an average of all missions completed. You scoring E at 73 points means you performed worse on many of the preceding stages. I suggest getting a solid 95-100 on the intro stage, and keep an average of 90-95 on the first easier ones, so you can afford more mistakes on the later harder ones. As long as your average is above 85, it's A rank, and a guaranteed EX skill.

ZERO4 allows you a full lifebar without score penalties. Keep your elf level equal or lower than max. In addition, make good use of all four sub tanks given to you. In ZERO2 and 3 you're going to have to survive with only two tanks, though, and none in ZERO1.

I never use cyber elves, and I use Dash ALL THE TIME. Literately, if I have to jump or wall scale, I hold down L. It keeps the speed up. And for bosses, I try to keep my buster charged, but use the triple slash rather than a charged slash.

What I'm curious of, is which game in the series is easiest to achieve a high rank? Ive only played the first two games, So I'll put my assumptions on the first game being the easiest. The fact that you can grind to level up your skills on weapons makes things a breeze.
