Should Wily play a role in X9? He was Serges in X2 and Isoc in X6, so, is it time for a new form?

So IMO im not sure. I think X9 if anything, should follow up on X8. Lumine is the new main villain. Sigma is no more. Much like X1-3 are X centric and X4-6 are Zero centric, It makes sense that X and 8 being Axl Centric, X9 should probably be so too. Leaave the Wily thead for a later game when we can return to the X and Zero centrism.

I wouldn't mind Vile returning either (and maybe we'd get the chance to learn how he came back the second time, or the origin of how he got to be rebellious and "damaged" in the first place). Even a new villain appearing would be welcome.
Lumine needs to be in it though, and Sigma needs to stay dead, at least for the time being. Sigma staying dead is the single most important thing to me in a possible X9. One great thing the X series has is its significant "rogues gallery" compared to other MegaMan series, and i wish we could explore it a little more by taking the focus away from Sigma. We can have a good X game without Sigma, and we've all already had a healthy dose of him. We already know his history, plans, thought processes, and personality. Let's explore another major villain for a change, like Lumine, "Wily," or even Vile.

But tyeah. Zero and X both had to deal with Sigma three times, so, why shouldn't Axl have to. But hey, aren't Lumine and all other new generation Reploids "Sigma" anyway? I still love the idea of Lumine as the final boss anyway, so, hey, whatever works.

I totally understand what you mean, and the thought touched my fancy as well. But in X8 they said Sigma was "dead," and for all we know X9 will be the last X game (i hope not (although the last game needs to be awesome too)). Thus my hope for a numbered X game without Sigma is stronger than my desire to see him face X, Zero, and Axl each three times.
If it's any consolation, Lumine is in some ways an extension of Sigma. The ever-evolving Maverick Virus has passed through several forms carrying different sentient consciences. Wily's was the first, then it was Sigma, and now Lumine has usurped Sigma's role. Clearly, Lumine has survived through Axl just as his predecessor Sigma has done countless times before. Lumine was probably granted by Sigma the ability to transmit a virus carrying his own consciousness, so that he could act as a successor in case anything happened to Sigma. What Sigma probably didn't count on was Lumine turning on him so soon. That or all New Generation Reploids can become viruses... and that has frightening implications.
That's one way to reconcile the storylines of the Zero series and X series as well: even though "Sigma" was defeated, the "Sigma Virus" branch of the Maverick Virus survived a lot longer via Lumine and others like him.
Tying all this rambling into this thread's topic, "Wily" may turn out to constitute another branch of the Maverick Virus, one that still carries the original consciousness it was implanted with.

Ooooh boy. Here we go.
Manga has nothing to do with this. This based on games only.

English localization only. it completely re-wrote the game.
In japanese he says 'Such regret... To be defeated by that Robotic memento of Right"
I will NOT go into the Serges/Isoc/Wily discussion after we JUST finished having it with DSL. If anyone else wants to, they can.
just browse this thread.

What exactly does this have to do with Wily..?

Its obvious he has been pretty busy during the Mega Man X timeline whith him helping Sigma and constantly checking in on Zero.
I think he should be brought back and they should finally let Zero have 1 final showdown face to face with his creator. Afterall he is apparently dead or atleast missing during the MMZ timeline so there has to be some sort of explaination to why he is not checking up on his ultimate creation.

You didn't get all of my point. I mean that it should be more Wily saturated than X6, and with X9 even closer to the Maverick War conclusion, it only makes more room to delve within the behind the curtain character.

Sorry I should have elaborated a bit more. I wasn't trying to disagree with the point, just trying to point out the fact that Wily DID let Zero seal himself away since that is what he did in Zero's ending of X6 which was the prelude to Mega Man Zero.
However I do agree with you that I would like to see him come back as it is never explained what exactly happened to him. The Virus is obviously still around as they make reference to the incident in X5 in X8 noting that Zero was still very disturbed by the events that took place in X5. So if they were going to bring that back up again in X8 I'm sure it's going to be an issue in X9 thus bringing Wily back into the plot. I do think that X9, if ever made (keeping fingers crossed), might be the last Mega Man X game and if it is Zero and Wily need to meet face to face in my opinion as I believe that everything started with Wily.

But speaking of the Virus itself, it lasts till the time passes that led to the creation of the Mother Elf, which is after Zero's sealing. Which could be interesting when considering Wily either still around at that time or not.
But I agree, X5 and X8 did effect Zero profoundly, especially since after X5, his body was spreading the Virus as well. Though I don't think it should be a conclusion, since it can open as much as they want since it in a sense zero's out for the Elf Wars.

Though I do have one question out of curiosity as it's been a few years since I last played X6.
When did it state that it took place at an unknown time in the future?
Also, though I can see everyone wanting to see the gap between the X series and the Zero series filled I doubt they will ever do that >.> after all, we're already up to Mega Man 10 and we've yet to see any foreshadowing of X and Zero's creations within the main series (not counting powerbattles when they show Zero....which was AWESOMENESS!!!)

Watching the vids on youtube, it is strongly implied by the presence of the 'Mysterious Scientist', as well as the correlation with the release of Zero 1 (X6 stating he would sleep over 100 years, and Zero epilogue stating X fought a war by himself for nearly 100 years). So it is more or less piecing the pieces together kind of thing.
Unless I'm forgetting something or if the Japanese X6 states anything of the like.

I doubt Wily would be anything of a Key Villain. More rather a key secondary character/avatar character. Something that continues to assist Zero/key villain for the plot, and involve himself a bit more (the more towards Zero, the more that can be done for both characters as per development). Like his role in X2 and X6, secondary yet it's own mastermind type. If that makes sense.
Since as long as the Virus remains about, effectively so does 'Wily'. At least for his out-of-body ability (since within a body could hold it's own restrictions).
