I believe some user were wondering about deaf the world after I posted the word "deaf" into the topic


Like any community the deaf and hard of hearing community has (and had) its own publications. There are both independent publications and publications put out by various organizations of the deaf and hard of hearing. Speaking and Sign Languages are not same...


Each of these sign languages has a distinct grammar and vocabulary making them mutually unintelligible.

Some may doubt whether ASL is a genuine “foreign language,” but all the evidence suggests that it is. It’s not just English expressed through signs rather than words — that method of communication exists, but it is known as Sign-Supported English and is different from American Sign Language. ASL has its own grammar, different from English’s, and linguists in general accept that ASL is a real and distinct language rather than an inferior variant of English. Of course, like any foreign language, it also lets you meet new people and see different cultures — though, in this case, without even leaving America. And there are definitely noticeable differences in the Deaf culture — for example, if a deaf student wants to ask a question in a lecture, they walk up to the front and sign their question so that they can be seen.

The grammar of American Sign Language (ASL) is the best studied of any sign language, though research is still in its infancy, dating back only to William Stokoe in the 1960s. Stokoe was the first linguist to approach any sign language as a full natural language with its own grammar, an approach which is now accepted practice for all Deaf sign languages. Stokoe's phonological model, for example, has been successfully applied to several other sign languages, such as British Sign Language, which is unrelated to ASL.




"Deaf", "partially deaf", "hard of hearing" and "hearing-impaired"
The term "deaf" generally implies a profound loss of hearing. Individuals with either severe or moderate deafness are commonly described as "partially deaf" or "hard of hearing", while those with mild deafness are commonly described as "hard of hearing." People with varying degrees of hearing loss are also commonly described as "hearing-impaired."

The term "hard of hearing" may be used to describe all degrees of hearing loss up to and including total deafness. It is more likely to be used by individuals who have acquired deafness in adulthood rather than by those who have grown up deaf. In the case of profound deafness, this may be a for the simpler and more accurate "deaf." Interestingly, this is seen as a euphemism only from the side of the mainstream. Members of the Deaf community do not generally aspire to be hearing and reject labels such as "hard of hearing" and "hearing-impaired" on the basis that they reflect the mindset that deafness is a pathological condition.

Total deafness is quite rare. Most deaf people can hear sounds at at least some frequencies, but a person's hearing may not be useful for spoken communication if he or she lacks sensitivity in the frequency range that is typical for speech.

Hearing people are usually to be famous for some reason...

But deaf can be famous too...

How do I feel about being deaf??

I kinda understand what you're going through dude. My friend's roomate whose also deaf does sign langauge, though I have a hard time understanding the hand signs as well I think they're pretty cool to learn. It's just remembering them is the issue for me.

I guess this would explain your grammar for alot of what you type, probably aspects of your language that you un-intentionally bring into your writing. Plus your writing is more apt to be more like your 1st language but since it is a language expressed with motions being transferred into a language in writing I can see where there could be complications.

Thanks... I know it hard for hearing to learn how to sign language. But you will get used with it if keep learning! lol.

Yeah... I was try translate my language into English...

Beside I just have hard to understand English.... I mean read what a word mean like Dictionary. Plus when I reply. Somebody reply me. "No I mean," "You misunderstand me. " Etc. You know?

Your welcome and I talk to him once in a while but instead of writing things in paper I try to use a sign langauge but not the technical kind like for example:
I tell him let's drive over there and I'll use my two hands and swurve them like a steering wheel and point street directions. I know it's not much but he understands.

If you are in College. The Library should have few book to learn how to sign language. Or at least, write to him to teach you to learn how to sign lol...

I never thought that you weren't deaf. Someone would have to really go out of their way to claim they were deaf just to see how people reacted. When I posted that question about the Rick Roll thing I never questioned you being deaf, I just was uncertain what exactly you meant by heard

I can't remember how many % I have lost of hearing...

I took test maybe 6 - 8 months ago. Doctor told me that I have lost over 90%...

With my old hear aid.

Now I got new hear aids. I can hear the sound better than old one. But still can't hear what people speak....

Is American Sign Language used by all Deaf people in the Deaf-World?

Have Deaf Americans always used American Sign Language?

It is more acceptable to refer to a Deaf person as Deaf.

Why don't Deaf people rely on lip-reading to communicate with hearing people?

Despite the popular media portrayal of Deaf characters who can easily read lips from great distances using binoculars, only a small percentage of spoken English words-some studies put the number at 30%-are visible on the lips. Due to the guesswork involved, misunderstandings can easily arise, making lip-reading unreliable and frustrating. Some Deaf people are more skilled than others, while many cannot lip-read at all. Still, Deaf people often have public encounters where they are commonly expected to carry on a conversation by reading lips. To ensure full communication, it is best to retain the services of certified sign language interpreters. For brief interactions, exchanging written notes may be okay.

Where can I find out more about sign language classes and Interpreter Training Programs (ITPs)?

Call your local university or community college. Most schools of higher education now offer sign language programs. If there is a Commission for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing in your state, it may have a list of places that offer sign language classes and ITPs. Local agencies that advocate for deaf people may also be helpful. You can also contact the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD).

My girlfreind TEACHES sign language and didn't even know there were multiple types of sign languages. I told her and she was like...." ...seriously?" She teaches pre-kindergarten so it's not like she would know EVERYTHING about sign language. Like Dynamo said SpiderZed thanks for the info.

How do Deaf people use the telephone?

Before the availability of the TTY-a teletypewriter adapted to send signals over the telephone-Deaf people had no way of making telephone calls except to rely on hearing family and friends, as well as strangers. A TTY has a typewriter keyboard and an electronic LED display. A TTY works by transmitting messages to another TTY, with the caller and other party alternately typing back and forth, using established terms like "GA" for "go ahead," indicating it's the other person's turn to respond, and "SK" for "stop keying" to end a call. Also known as a TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf), Deaf people fondly refer to the device as a TTY.

Because Deaf people could only call other people who also had a TTY, access to the telephone was still limited-and frustrating. That changed once telecommunications relay services became a reality.

What are Telecommunications Relay Services and how do they work?

Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) offer anyone-Deaf or hearing-who dials a relay center in any region the ability to put through a call with the assistance of a relay operator. The operator types the hearing person's words to the Deaf person on a TTY and voices the Deaf person's words to the hearing person. Each state has its own relay center telephone numbers. To make things simpler, callers can now dial 711 anywhere and be connected to the relay center serving the geographic area where the call is made. All you need is the phone number of the Deaf person you wish to call.

In some areas it is now possible to make video relay calls using computer-mounted cameras. After dialing and connecting to a relay center, a Deaf person signs to the camera lens and an interpreter watching the monitor relays the conversation to a hearing person, then signs the response, which the Deaf person views on the computer screen, all in real time.

How do Deaf people know a) when the phone or doorbell is ringing? b ) the baby is crying? c) the alarm clock is going off?

a) Light signaling systems that connect to the phone jack, doorbell buzzer, and a lamp or stand-alone bulb are standard features in Deaf homes. With newer wireless versions, a master console about the size of a portable CD player or smaller can be set up in one room, with remote receivers in other rooms. When the telephone or doorbell rings, the lamp flashes. A Deaf person can tell whether the phone or doorbell is ringing from the flash rate and from two different lights on the receiver.

b ) Baby monitors made for Deaf parents are placed in the crib or nearby. A remote receiver in another room will flash a connected lamp to alert a parent to the infant's cries.

c) Two types of alarm clocks are used to awaken Deaf people in the morning: the vibrating kind, placed under a mattress, and a lamp flasher, which flicks on and off until it is turned off. Both are plugged into specially designed alarm clocks with an adapter. There are several models available from manufacturers of "assistive technology" who serve the Deaf community. Some come with snooze buttons just like regular alarm clocks. For travelers, small portable alarm clocks can be placed under the pillow and will vibrate, getting the sleeper up in time.

How do Deaf people communicate with their doctors, lawyers, and others who do not know sign language?

Because of the importance of communication, Deaf people prefer to have a certified and trusted sign language interpreter assist them when visiting their doctor, lawyer, or other professional. In a few rare situations, because of sensitive or personal information, they may choose to rely on other methods, but in general, it is easier, as well as safer, to rely on a highly qualified and experienced sign language interpreter to ensure effective communication.

Who pays for the services of sign language interpreters?

Usually, the person or institution providing the service. Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1972, educational programs receiving federal funds must provide reasonable accommodations to Deaf students. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), places of public accommodation must be accessible to Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The definition of places of public accommodation is very broad and includes medical service providers, law firms, movie theatres, museums, libraries, and so on. The ADA also covers private employers and state and government agencies.

I personally am half deaf, quite literally. I only have one working ear. I have a missing bone in my left ear. I can only hear very low tones with it. My right ear, over the years, makes up for my bad one.

At the age of 17 months I fell ill, I forget the spelling but, spinalerringitus. (Watch Stephen Kings, Pet Semetary, when the mother has her flashback of her sick aunt. The sick aunt suffers from it.) Anyways, That is what caused the bone in my ear to pop out. Along with some fluids. I hated hearing aids, they were bothering my ear, causing it to hurt. From time to time, the stupid things would do that high pitched ring, that pissed me off even more because it hurt my good ear.

After 6th grade I decided to forget the stupid things, and live life without them.

I am pretty good at reading lips, so when someone is talking to me, I have a tendancy to jump from thier eyes to thier lips.

When ever I get a new job anywhere, I tell my employer, "don't be afraid to yell at me, to get my attention. Be creative with the yelling if you want."

Seriously though, I am glad to see this topic, SpiderZenanreh, I had no idea you were a deaf man. As far as hand signs, the only ones I know are the middle finger, thumbs up, rock on, and the ok sign. But that is about it.

I'm not the only deaf person on here? I'm so happy I could cry!

I started out being able to hear. My hearing was 80% in both ears. I have (I know I'm going to misspell it) ottoselerosis which is the narrowing of the ear canal. I'm now completely deaf in my left ear, and about 79% deaf in my right ear. I wear a earing aid on my right ear which lets me hear a little bit. I use PSL, (Pigion Signed Language) which is a compination of ASL and SEE. (Signing Exact English) I have a hearing ear dog, Bengi, who is a yorkie mix that goes to work with me. (I'm a Daycare Lady) I went to a special school for deaf children most of my life and in high school, my aunt worked as my interpreter. I read lips really well and I can talk really well which is surprising to most people.

I always say, Deaf and proud of it!

What is Signing Exact English?

Signing Exact English is a sign language system that represents literal English. To make visible everything that is not heard, S.E.E. supplements what a child can get from hearing and speechreading. Since American Sign Language (ASL) has different vocabulary, idioms and syntax from English, SEE modifies and supplements the vocabulary of ASL so children can see clearly what is said in English. This system was first made available in 1972.

How widely is SEE used?

During the 1970's there was a great shift to add sign language to speech, speechreading and hearing aids. By 1978, Signing Exact English was reported the most used English sign system in public school programs for the hearing impaired in the United States. In 1985, more programs wanted teachers skilled in S.E.E. than any other sign system. Today, SEE is used in every state and in other countries as well.

Is S.E.E. effective?

When families and schools use Signing Exact English consistently, children are reportedly growing up with markedly better English skills than indicated on prior tests.

Is S.E.E. hard to learn?

Not really! Families who begin learning when their child is a baby can learn basic vocabulary and English sentences. Their vocabulary grows as the child grows. It is always beneficial when there are sign classes they can attend and other people to practice with. However, video tapes/DVDs are available for families who are not able to attend classes. It is like learning any other new physical skill-- typing, shorthand, driving a car, etc.-- if you want to learn and are willing to practice, the skill will develop.
