Yun (Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II)



"He is a Jedi. He deserves a battle."

Falling in love with the Prophetess Sariss, Yun was convinced by her into killing his father and joining Jerec's cadre of Dark Jedi. Killing became a norm for Yun soon after, but when he noticed Sariss not returning his feelings, he began to have doubts of his actions. Eventually in Jerec's search for the Valley of the Jedi, Yun dueled the protagonist, Kyle Katarn. Defeated, Yun demanded Katarn to kill him, but was spared. Surprised but also pleased, Yun escapes. After a series of other events, Katarn is downed and in the hands of Yun and his master Sariss. When Sariss attempts to execute Katarn, Yun intervenes and saves his life, but getting himself mortally wounded in the process. Just before dying, he says the above words, and becomes one with the Light Side of the Force. Saved by Yun's actions, Katarn goes on to stop Jerec's schemes and even wields Yun's lightsabre for quite some time after.

Kainé (NieR)



"It cannot be a sin to exist."

Outcast by her village, possessed by a Shade and her only family killed, Kainé is driven by hate and kills just about anything in her way. After meeting Nier though she begins to find new meaning in life, making friends for the first time and managing to finally avenge her Grandmother. She begins to show more and more of her caring side after meeting the young boy Emil, whom is also left with a curse that keeps him outcast from everyone else. She even risks her own life to save Nier's village, despite being filled with people that fear and shun her like so many others.

Garrett (Thief: The Dark Project, Thief II: The Metal Age, Thief: Deadly Shadows)



"Some people in this city are too rich for their own good. Luckily they have me to give them a hand."

Once an orphan left to fend for himself, Garrett is one day recruited into the Keepers. A highly secretive organization, they aim to maintain balance between the many warring factions in The City. During his years with them, Garrett quickly exceeds all other acolytes and even high ranking Keepers in stealth. Not fond of their strict lifestyle and beliefs though, he abandons them to make a living with his new skills. Quickly rising to the top in the Underground, Garrett becomes a renowned Master Thief. Like any criminal, he's not without some enemies, namely the industrious Order of the Hammer and nature-loving Pagans. Despised by both and always in the middle of their conflicts, Garrett often winds up in a situation far bigger than he'd want, usually saving the City in the process with a little manipulation by his own former faction. In the end, he wants nothing more than to be left alone and steal at his heart's content.

I think I'll pull a Model_O and put my top 3 Heroes, Anti-Heroes, and Villains too, as well as some honorable mentions.

Top Heroes:

1. Zero from Mega Man X, though I also like his Mega Man Zero incarnation. What is there to say about Zero that hasn't already been said? Nothing, so let's move on. Shall we?
2. Mario from Donkey Kong or whatever game he originated from. Come on, who doesn't love Italian plumbers created by Japanese people and runs like a Welshman?
3. Sonic the Hedgehog from...well, Sonic the Hedgehog. He's a hedgehog. A blue hedgehog who likes chili dogs. And he's the oldest video game character I know to have had a personality. Y'know, with that attitude of his, and his feet stamping and looking at you if you're too slow. Wait...too slow...
Honorable Mention: Soma Cruz from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow. I dunno, there's always been something I really liked about Soma. He's the most flexible 2D Castlevania character that I can name off the top of my head. I couldn't go back to the originals because the controls were so stiff. Especially when compared to the Sorrow games.

Top Anti-Heroes:

1. Shadow the Hedgehog from Sonic Adventure 2. Despite what people say about him being emo and stuff, I like him. I mean, he has no reason to be happy, anyway. I especially liked him when he was voiced by Jason Anthony Griffith. There's just something missing from the new voice actor in my opinion.
2. Miles Edgeworth from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. I'd like to think of him as an anti-hero turned hero. Before he met Phoenix Wright, he was a cold and calculated prosecutor and was one of the many prosecutors who had never lost a case in court. His hatred for criminals overshadowed his sense of justice and ultimately drove him to just win to have a good record. However, after losing to Wright several times, he learned the error of his ways and focused on finding the truth in cases, even if it meant losing, which didn't matter to him anymore.
3. Bass from Mega Man 7. He's just Bass. Out to get Mega Man, doesn't care for Dr. Wily's schemes, and would do anything to fight Mega Man, even if it meant teaming up with him, like in Mega Man: The Power Battle, or Mega Man & Bass.

Top Villains:

1. Dracula from Castlevania. Y'know, if Dracula had the powers and abilities he had in the Castlevania games, it'd be a wonder how he got beaten in the Dracula novel. Van Helsing wouldn't get a chance to pull out a cross or anything because of Dracula's teleportation. Or projectile firing. Or whatever you prefer. Anyway, yeah. Oh, and also, WHAT IS A MAN? A MISERABLE LITTLE PILE OF SECRETS.
2. Albert Wesker from Resident Evil. Possibly the only person in the world who wears sunglasses at night and doesn't look like a douchebag. He has a killer theme, a badass outfit, an evil aura, and--CHRIIIIIIS!!!
3. Dr. Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog. Ah, yes. Robotnik. How I love thee. There's just something about his persistence to conquer the world that I love. Not to mention his funky appearance and his supposed narcissism, putting his face on everything he makes. Oh, and I love his theme song in Adventure 2; E.G.G.M.A.N., by Paul Shortino, as well as the Doc Robeatnix Mix from Shadow the Hedgehog.
Honorable Mention: Matt Engarde from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney -- Justice for All. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the only client of Wright that actually was truthfully guilty. He manipulated everyone; his ex-girlfriend, his manager, his assassin, and his lawyer, Phoenix Wright. He got his assassin, Shelly de Killer, to kidnap Wright's partner Maya Fey in order to blackmail him. Of course, Engarde wanted a Not Guilty verdict, despite the fact he actually was Guilty.
